6 Steps to Building Self-Esteem in Children

by Abel Cheng

The beliefs and feelings we have about ourselves is called self-esteem. Our methods of motivation, attitudes, emotional judgments, and actions are all affected by the way we perceive ourselves.

What factors make up self-esteem? Self-confidence, pride, self-sufficiency, self-respect, and independence all combine to make self-esteem. The majority of our self-esteem is developed during childhood. Especially in kids, self-esteem constantly changes as we experience different social interactions and new events.

Enhancing a child’s self-esteem is the first step to ensuring his or her right to personal safety. Keeping children away from physical harm is only secondary.

A child’s self-esteem is based on a positive relationship with parents and eventually teachers. Parents can foster that can-do attitude in their children with a “Wow!” or a “That’s great!” every time they accomplish a feat.

But praise and positive reinforcement alone will not make children feel better automatically. Providing them with lots of love, care, and understanding is equally significant. Children who are happy and confident may still experience low self-esteem because they do not feel loved. Likewise, children who are loved and pampered at home may still feel inadequate and incompetent, thus ending up with low self-esteem. Hence, a balance of both should be present.

Giving constructive communication, positive messages, and carefully delivering criticism will lead to good self-esteem. Use these tips to improve a child’s self-perceptions.

1. Give “Don’ts” as little as necessary Handing out too many negative remarks will leave a child feeling inadequate. Keep your responses as positive as possible.

2. Let kids complete their sentences. Avoid interruptions, as these disrupt their train of thought or make them forget what they’re saying. Otherwise, they’ll feel as if their ideas are insignificant and not worth listening to.

3. Establish eye contact. Be a good model of conversation by giving kids your full attention. This communicates that you are interested in what they are saying, and that you are stressing a noteworthy idea, as well.

4. Make sure you have conversations One person shouldn’t do all the talking. Likewise, kids must learn only one person should talk at a time. Everyone can’t speak at once. Make sure they know that if more than one person is trying to talk, they won’t understand a thing.

5. Keep your cool. Make sure you wait to talk to your child when you are calm and relaxed. Speaking to a child when you are angry will only feed the flames of conflict.

6. Criticism is still necessary Stressed earlier was the importance of positive comments. Criticism is required, as well. Kids must know when they are misbehaving or didn’t perform up to expectations. Tell them why what or what they didn’t do wasn’t acceptable, and stress the importance of not doing it again.

The Place Of A Parent Is In The Wrong

by Russell M. Stewart

If there’s one thing that every parent has had to learn the hard way, through experience, it is this - that parents are always wrong. Whatever we choose to do as parents, a friends’ parents are doing differently, or whatever we think is good advice to follow today, was scrapped by everyone else yesterday. Being a parent is hard work, and after all those childhood years resenting our own parents and vowing that we would do things so much better if only given the chance, we are now well aware that we are the very parents that we vowed we’d try not to be as children. It might well be the case that we’re not making the same mistakes as our parents, but we’re excellent at making whole rafts of new ones to make life interesting for ourselves and our children.

One aspect in particular which has worried parents today, and which was not an issue back in the days when we were children, is the advent and proliferation of computers and other technologies which allow our children to meet, interact and communicate online with people from all over the world, and to spend hours glued to a screen focussing entirely on moving bunches of pixels from one place to another in a desperate attempt to do strange things like finish the ‘Quest of The j’Graa Goblet’ or seek out Lord Krakticka to pwn him with the rest of the guildies. If this means nothing to you, then join the club - it’s a big club, with a growing number of members.

Most of us are quite literate when it comes to using computers, and indeed most of us have to use them for work each day. Sending and receiving emails, creating letters and documents, working through spreadsheets and databases is of little difficulty. Yet our children seem to find depths to the computer that leave us perplexed. We are the generation who is aware of identity problems, and shred our paperwork rigorously, protecting our personal data at all costs. Yet our children seem to relish the idea of publishing photos, journals and intimate secrets with rash abandon for the whole world to see and do what they will with the material. We’d never stand in the street handing out our email address, phone number and a bunch of photos to any individual who passed us. Yet this is exactly what our children seem to be doing in the digital world. They claim to have hundreds of online friends, yet have never met any of them, and this goes against our very concept of what friendship means.

Then of course there are our worries and concerns regarding the dubious people online that are simply there to lure our children to some dark alley and do what they will with them. We hear the statistics and see the news stories of yet another child who met up with some stranger from the internet and was never seen again, and it’s easy to be tempted to unplug the computer and throw it on the bonfire as though tainted in some evil way.

But the truth is that it is not the computer which is dangerous, and the internet is not an enemy or something dark and subterranean that we should, or could, avoid. Every day we take many risks that could potentially endanger our lives. We drive a tonne of metal at sixty miles an hour just feet from other lumps of metal coming the other way, and accept this as perfectly normal. We stand far more chance of being killed driving on the road than we do of encountering danger on the internet. The difference is both in perception, and understanding. We perceive danger in the internet largely because of a lack of understanding, but because we understand the nature of the risks of driving, we see less danger. We wouldn’t drive on the motorway blindfolded, because we’d almost certainly be killed. Being voluntarily blinded to the risks of the internet not only increases our perception of the danger, but the actual level of risk involved.

What are the dangers or risks involved in using the internet, or computers, and exactly what can we as parents do to try to ensure that our children can enjoy using this amazing resource, whilst at the same time staying as safe as possible? The key to safety is understanding - whatever it is you’re doing. Whether it’s driving on the motorway, parachuting or flying to the moon, the more you understand the risks, the less risk you’ll be taking. By understanding what it is that your children are doing, and knowing what they mean by avatars, profiles, chat rooms, messenger programs and online games, you will be able to share your child’s experiences much more, and help them to use the internet more safely. The more we can work with our children to encourage them to use the technology in a positive way, but understanding the dangers and risks, the more chance we have of helping to ensure their safety, enabling them to decide themselves on the level of risk.

We are familiar with teaching our children about the dangers of the streets, and they are well aware of the risks associated with strangers. They know not to open the door to strangers, not to talk to strangers, not to accept lifts from strangers, and to simply run away and report anything suspicious. But on the internet, strangers can have names, faces, profiles, histories, and the advantage of distance. The problem is, of course, that our children don’t see a stranger, when they are looking at a profile of someone they’re enjoying chatting to. The fact that the photo of a child their own age, with a name, a school, hobbies and family, could all be fictitious is ignored. It is so easy for people to hide behind fake profiles, and thereby lull children into revealing just enough information to identify them.

Possibly you may already be aware of the fact that there is a wealth of security software available for parents. These enable you to lock down and protect your computer, installing filters and logs, restrictions and blocking tools, guards and scanners, but to be honest most of this will simply cause our children to be ever more curious about what really is on the other side of the wall you’ve built. We were children once, and we know that the first thing you want to do if told not to look over the wall, is to look over the wall, and most children are smart enough to work out a way of getting past the security. A far more effective way of supporting and protecting them is to communicate with them. To have the computer somewhere publically visible so that you can see what they’re doing, share an interest, and talk with them, is far better than trying to lock everything down and then running away to pretend the dangers will go away.

Recognizing A Fake Yorkie Breeder

by Susan Bailey

The relationship between you and your Yorkie breeder is extremely important and you rely on your Yorkie breeder for a lot of important information and advice while raising your new pup. If you wind up with a fake Yorkie breeder then you could be in for a very long and frustrating journey so be sure you do your due diligence and do everything you can to make sure you avoid a fake breeder.

Check with your local Better Business Bureau and see if there are any complaints registered against the particular Yorkie breeder you are considering doing business with. A breeder that has a long list of customer complaints is someone that does not run their business very well and is also probably not someone you want to wind up doing business with.

Any reputable breeder is going to make sure that a new owner leaves not only with a dog but also with detailed care instructions that can be referenced by the owner to try and ensure the health of your dog. A good Yorkie breeder is just as concerned with the ongoing health of your dog as you are, so they are going to do what they can to help make sure you are able to care for your new pet in the proper way and that includes detailed care instructions.

Another sign of a good and reputable Yorkie breeder is that they will give you a sample of your dog’s food so that you know what to feed your dog to make it healthy and happy. A breeder that does not offer you a free sample of food is probably a fake Yorkie breeder and definitely not someone you want to deal with.

A reputable Yorkie breeder will be an outlet that insurance companies will try and use to market pet insurance. For this reason you can usually expect a free six-week pet insurance policy when you buy a dog from a reputable Yorkie breeder.

If your breeder does not offer free pet insurance and has never heard of such a thing then the chances are that they were not reputable enough to catch the eye of the insurance companies and so they should probably not be reputable enough to catch your eye either.

Your breeder is important to the future health and happiness of your dog and for that reason you need to make sure you take all the steps necessary to figure out if you are dealing with a reputable and legitimate breeder or a fake Yorkie breeder.

A fake breeder is potentially unethical and even possibly dangerous so be very careful in your search for a good and reputable Yorkie breeder.

A Look at Dogs With Bad Reputation

by Letho Maseko

When the owner calls the dog bad, the truth of the matter is the owner is probably the cause of this. It’s irritating when walking down the sidewalk in your own neighborhood only to have a dog jump up on your clean clothes. Many people find that their neighbors’ pets like nothing more than using other people’s yards as a toilet. The dogs are no worse than the children of the neighbor. When adults in a home are clueless about their responsibilities, you can expect only bad behavior from pets and kids.

The dog must be taught to behave within some set parameters when around people. Inexperienced owners would be smart to find a dog trainer who can teach them how to properly handle the animal without breaking its spirit. Either you contact your vet office or pet store to get to meet a trainer or seek online help and tackle your pet problem before it goes out of hand.

This training could teach owners how to be in command of their pets. At times, trainers will admit it’s easier to train the dog than the owner! Dogs that must be leash trained for walking in public or at the park need practice; this begins around the yard or in a smaller location. Barking is often a behavior that distresses owners and neighbors. Shouting or punishing your pet for engaging in this normal communication is counterproductive - as well as confusing to the animal.

Remember when the dog needs your attention, is hungry or thirsty, they will bark. A barking dog can also be a strong deterrent to burglars, so completely suppressing its bark might not be in your best interest. Many owners make the mistake of letting a puppy bark as they please but change their attitude when they grow older.

Trainers can help teach you how to reinforce behavior that you desire with both praise and treats. You ought to reward your pet for good behavior then they will now exactly what they should not do in the future. There are many behaviors which are part of the breed of the dog so it is important to remember that you can teach your pet to go against these. If you want a certain type of conduct, then get one that can give you what you expect. For a dog to be well-trained, you require affection, tolerance and dedication.

Amazing Baby Shower Decoration Ideas

by Dana Hall

Baby shower decorations are a great way to increase the excitement at the baby shower and to make the party more festive. Baby shower decorations do not have to be expensive and can be hand made instead of bought at the store.

A fun idea is to make an edible baby shower centerpiece and incorporate its decoration into the shower. The host should bake a cake the morning of the shower and have lots of cake decorations on hand. To decorate the centerpiece cake, you can either have guests arrive early to help decorate and make a surprise for the mother or you can use it as a bonding moment during the baby shower.

What A Great Idea!

The best part about having a baby shower party theme is that everything that is to be planned and organized becomes streamlined and narrows down to a certain idea. It may seem a bit tiring at first to zero in on a particular theme, but it does help a lot to plan anything further ahead.

Whether the baby will be a boy or girl, tie baby blue or pink ribbons on the basket to liven up the basket. You can also use baby shower related pink and blue balloons to finish off the baskets that will be used as centerpieces.

Add Some Personalization

A really spectacular new and fun decoration is personalized baby shower confetti and would work great for a baby shower decoration. Have personalized confetti made using a picture of the mom-to-be and other fun baby shower images and/or words.

Any party supplies store should have plenty of plates, napkins, and cups to choose from. There are even plates, napkins, and cups specifically for baby showers. Place them on the serving table to decorate that part of the room.

Decorative Elements

You can also use decorated un-opened baby food jars to keep on the tables and later give them to the parents. Photographs of the parents can also be used in various places to add to the decorations of the big event.

Balloons are a popular baby shower decor choice, but you could consider balloon centerpieces too, which can be as attractive as flowers but cheaper. Using small Mylar balloons is one idea, arranged in a vase.

by Roshan

So, how come ornithology believed to be a great pastime? Well it helps you meet up with other people, learn about birds and enjoy nature’s aesthetic surroundings.

If you know someone who is into this, you could surprise them on their birthday by buying something that matches his interest. First know what things ornithologists carry with them while they go to the woods to watch birds; then you’ll know what type of bird watching gifts are likely to be appreciated.

Believably a hat is one of the easiest and least expensive items to buy. This could be a good idea as it should improve their vision and act as a sun blocker too.

Another very useful gift is a pair of cargo trousers with multiple pockets which allow them to carry snacks and other necessary bits and pieces.

Another cool item which has even more storage is a bird watching vest. For easy access to a cellular phone, water and map etc. these vests cannot be bettered.

When they’ve a backpack that’s worn out, it’s a simple matter buying a new one for them. There are plenty of sizes available in backpacks; a heavy duty one is not really required as these people should be traveling light.

Binoculars are possibly the most expensive, but the most appreciated, gift you can give to a bird watcher. Quality binoculars are pricey because of the optics involved which allow the bird watcher to see the birds from a distance with great clarity. There are a whole lot of varieties in binoculars, and price range too with the top-of-the-range versions able to be used in complete darkness; others can capture images, both still and moving.

Bird watching journals are used by most enthusiasts, after all how else would they keep account of what birds they’ve seen and where; this could be a great gift.

For a gift with a difference, why not pay for an annual subscription to a bird watching magazine, preferably one they already read. Published monthly (sometimes quarterly), they’re able to see pictures of birdies which frequent distant places around the world.

How about making a collection and buying a bird watching holiday for your friend to send them someplace they have not been like South America or Canada for instance; providing you’ve that kinda money! It is important to remember that there are thousands of species of birds in this world; several do not find the climate of US a suitable.

Unless you talk to the recipient first and interpret their needs, you can never determine which gifts would be most appreciated. A short conversation will already give you a lot of ideas, and then you barely have to pick the right one that’s within your budget and meaningful to the person.

Who knows? It’s possible that during the course of your shopping, you might learn to appreciate bird watching yourself. Rather than admiring such people, you would soon be joining their group.

Are your Pets Insured? Think again..

by Roshan R Prasad

Pet insurance covers all kinds of emergencies, injuries and illnesses, as well as visits to the vet’s surgery, prescription fees, tests to diagnose ailments and x-rays, etc.

Just like travel insurance policies for people, you can purchase short term pet insurance policies for your pets as well. It is always a good idea to have your pet insured as early as possible because as your pet gets older past the age of eight for cats and dogs, it may be difficult if not impossible to purchase insurance for them owing to the increased chance of vet’s bills.

Many people aren’t aware that health insurance schemes for their pet animals have been available for over 15 years now. Your first port of call for pet insurance could well be your local veterinary surgeon who has probably been dealing with pet insurance schemes for some time and would be in a good position to give advice on the subject.

Just as with human insurance there are various types of pet insurance, including third party liability coverage, which will protect you if you pet harms someone, destroys property, causes an accident, and so forth.

With full cover pet insurance for example, your insurance company will agree to pay for all the costs and expenses incurred as a result of your family pet having suffered any illness or accident.

That is why asking your vet, in the first instance, what they believe is the best type of pet health insurance scheme to recommend is such a good idea for people that are new to this area of specialist insurance policies. However, even the most basic pet care insurance plan will cover the likes of small cuts, abrasions, accidents and even dental work.

Once a claim has been submitted to the pet insurance company, they communicate and pay the vet directly. Pet insurance has become more expensive over recent years along with its popularity and most loving pet owners will do almost anything for their pet’s wellbeing. For many pet owners, not purchasing pet insurance can mean expensive vet bills for every trip to the vets they make which tends to increase as the pet becomes older.

However, like all types of insurance, most pet insurance policies carry an excess which means that you have to pay a small amount towards the cost of any treatment claimed for under the policy. If you are concerned about long term care for your pet then there are pet insurance policies that will pay the vet for treatment for as long as your pet requires it, up to a maximum fixed yearly figure.

Owing to the number of different pets available, insuring your pet can be a very complicated business which is governed by the type of pet you own, its age, breed and overall health and is not typical of human health insurance.

Starting a pet insurance plan from as early as possible in your pets life is probably the best way to ensure its long term health and possible financial hardships later for yourself as your pet ages.

Training A Dog For Children Keeps Them Both Safe

by Lee Dobbins

If you have kids and want to adopt a dog, then training a dog for children is something you need to think about. There are a lot of families out there who have had an event happen between a dog and child that now causes tension and uneasiness. Children and dogs are not always compatible together. Certain dogs may not be comfortable around children or may not be trained properly at all, causing safety issues. Anyone who has children and has thought about adopting a dog has probably raised the concern as to whether or not that would be best, or if its better to forget the idea.

If you choose the right dog, there will be little training needed to insure the safety of both your kids and your new pet. Luckily, most dogs love kids and are kind in nature so there is a dog that will get along with your children and that your children will adore.

It is not difficult to train your dog to be both great company and a great playmate for your child. In fact, training a dog for children involves little more than teaching it not to bite and not to jump on small kids. However, both your child and dog will need to learn some basic behaviors for living and playing together.

A dog that does not display unnecessarily aggressive behavior is a good idea if there will be small children in the home. If they have a calm and easy demeanor they will be more easily trained to play and cooperate with your children and you. Children must also know that the new dog is not a plaything; it is never a good idea to subject a new dog to unusual rough play as they may become violent or scared. Your dog should not feel the need to defend itself by biting your child nor should they fear your child.

While it’s critical to let kids know that they must be considerate and gentle with a new dog, it is wise not to leave him unsupervised with very little ones. If you allow the youngsters and the new dog to get used to each other gradually and in your presence, that is the best way to introduce them to each other and help them form compatibility.

Along with training a dog for children, you need to choose a dog that has the right demeanor in the first place. When you have little kids, it’s good to take the potential new dog’s personality into consideration before reaching a final decision. A dog that is playful yet well-behaved is the best match for your kids.

Save Money By Purchasing Groceries In Bulk

by Judy Turner

Buying in bulk is a great way to save time and money. There are so many advantages to shopping this way that it is amazing more consumers don’t take advantage. Most large towns and cities have some form of bulk grocery store or wholesale club. You may be charged a membership fee but it is usually reasonable. Quite often a membership pays for itself after the first shopping trip.

Compare the cost of a single item with the cost per item when buying in bulk. For example, if you purchase a 12 pack of paper towels divide the price by 12 to see how much you spent per roll. If it is on sale then the savings are even bigger. Shopping this way means spending less and shopping less.

There are definitely certain types of food and household products that are the most beneficial to purchase in bulk. Paper products, soap and anything with a long shelf life are always good buys. The items that you go through daily are the ones that you spend the most money on. Many people may not find meat or other fresh products to be a worthy bulk investment. The truth is that anything that can go into the freezer is a good choice. Consider purchasing a large freezer and you will find that it pays for itself rather quickly.

There are always some products that are not recommended for buying in bulk. Perishable items that don’t freeze well should be purchased in smaller quantities. Check for sales on these items and plan your meals accordingly around these items to use them up quickly.

Many families find themselves running to the grocery store way too often. If you find yourself constantly stopping at the store in between shopping trips then that is your first indicator that buying in bulk may be best for you. Buying large quantities and breaking them into smaller ones will save you money and the time it takes to stop at the store frequently. Try to plan your menus in advance to avoid getting into a rut.

With the rising costs of fuel then it makes sense that making less trips means you will save money on gas. If you take fewer trips to the store for meal items and buy more at one time, the need to run out for groceries will be less frequent. Making grocery purchases in bulk is effective in cutting a variety of costs. Consider the ways it can help your family save time and money that can be better spent in other ways.

Positive Dog Training Techniques

by Lee Dobbins

When using a positive dog training approach, one must be sure to keep in mind that this type of training is based on rewarding your dog for good behavior.

Dog training requires positive reinforcement and should be handled in this manner. Your dog will need a firm hand at times in order to keep your pet in line, however you should not scold your dog constantly. It has been shown that dogs respond much better to positive reinforcement, so it is important to know when it is appropriate to praise your dog and when a firm hand is needed.

Give your dog a little treat any time he does what he is supposed to. Whether he stays when you tell him to, relieves himself in the correct manner, or follows any other command, be sure to praise him with a reward!

The rewards can be anything including praises, treats, belly rubs, or pats on the head.

The learning process can go quickly with positive dog training. Your dog wants to please you, so he will respond well to this kind of teaching. Just make sure you do not reward him for misbehaving.

Don’t ever be harsh with your dog unless there truly isn’t any other alternative. Only such behaviors as growling, chewing things up, or pulling on the leash justify a reprimand.

It is important to note that you only scold your dog if you catch him in the act. Otherwise, the reprimand will not be effective because the dog will not know why he is being reprimanded. A quick and sharp word of “bad dog!” or simply “no!” is enough to get the message across.

Be crisp and quick when your scold, being sure to maintain an angry and condemning tone. If you scold too frequently, your dog will end up ignoring you. You should never hit the dog, this will only lead to problems in the future.

If you are using a positive dog training method, one important thing to remember is when you should scold and when you should praise. Remember, your pet has just begun learning, and is trying. So be patient with your new friend. With a loving and understanding approach, your dog will find training easy and it will be a wonderful experience for both you and your dog.
