The Advances in Biotechnology

by Russell M. Stewart

What exactly is biotechnology? There are plenty of definitions being floated around by different organizations. Using biology in order to develop technology, with regard to product development and research, is what biotechnology entails. The fields biotechnology can feasibly be used in include agriculture, medicine, food science, environment and robotics.

We have always tried to manipulate and control the world, change it to suit our needs. We do that when we ferment beer, we do it when we culture bacteria, and now we have moved to new levels that would have been considered impossible a few decades back - we have cloned animals and research has turned to concepts like nucleotide-based organ regeneration.

Biotechnology was in practice much before the actual term was used to describe it. The basics began with very simple scientific methods such as preserving foods for winter. The first fruit juice fermentation to produce alcohol is believed to have been done in 6000 BC. Back then, it was more of an art than an actual science.

About twenty years ago, the role of genetics in artificially creating proteins in a living being was discovered. DNA was discovered and molecular biology became a part of mainstream science. This was what gave rise to the study of biotechnology under that name.

The mid 80s brought a revelation in biotechnology - genetic structures could be modified by careful combinations between animals and plants. This introduction to transgenic organisms also developed an area for further research into disease resistance and productivity rate increases. Modern biotechnology is used in a variety of ways and the medical and biological research fields have managed to get the most benefit out of it. The methods used have gone beyond ordinary genetic transfers, to include actual plant-generated pharmaceuticals and substance production for antibiotics and insulin.

There are three categories in modern biotechnology. The first is red biotechnology. This concerns the making of substances used in medicine and pharmaceuticals, like vaccines, proteins, antibiotics and vitamins. Red biotechnology also deals with genome manipulation. The other two kinds of biotechnology are green and white biotechnology.

White Biotechnology is also known as bio-manufacturing and Grey Biotechnology. This is not yet a completely established field and involves manipulating live organisms to create important industrial chemicals. Some of the organisms used in these techniques include bacteria, enzymes, moulds and yeast.

Green Biotechnology is important in agriculture - making better produce that stays fresh and lasts longer, and is more nutritious. This is something people have been doing for a long time - making sturdier crops, like cross-bred wheat for example.

The Upgoing WiFi Connectivity Trend

by Dan j Short

Any kind of “network” is basically about connections, communication and sharing information. This is true of a group of people with a common interest who are networking at an event, as well as with electronic devices that are designed for the purpose of handling information. Without a functioning electronic network of some type, the data stored on such devices is a lot less valuable if it cannot be exchanged easily. WiFi networks allow a variety of common electronic devices to do exactly that.

WiFi wireless networking allows you to share electronic files with friends and co-workers as needed, or even to easily share documents between your own devices, such as from your phone or personal digital assistant (PDA) to your computer. But, the real power of these wireless networks goes far beyond simply sharing files or being able to move them easily from your desktop computer to your laptop.

The world wide web has grown to become a significant source of all kinds of information for a wide array of people and their various needs. The internet has also become a more and more important way for people to conduct business. Before WiFi networks came along, the user had to find a place where they could physically plug their computer into a phone line or cable so they could have internet access.

But those days of needing to be physically tethered to a desk, or at least to a length of cable, are long gone if you have a computer, laptop, PDA or cell phone that is WiFi enabled. With a wireless card installed and working in your device, all that you need to do is locate wireless networks that are available. These can be public networks that are freely available for use, or private wireless services that companies provide for their employees, or even wireless networking solutions designed for use by those in a single household.

This standardization means that when a wireless WiFi network in implemented, there is an immediate level of flexibility and productivity available that creates new possibilities for the way people work, conduct business and access information. In the future, plans call for virtually all cell phones to be able to be integrated into these wireless mobile networks.

Business analysts, computer industry observers and technology consultants all agree about the future of WiFi networking. They are confident that wireless mobile networking will be everywhere within the next few years.

With each passing year, more companies are learning about the benefits of adding WiFi accessibility in their retail establishments, in their warehouses or in their offices. This often allows their employees to collaborate better internally and provide better customer service as well. Public facilities, such as major airports and libraries, are expanding their internet access hotspots, making it easier all the time for people to find free and easy wireless internet access when they are on the go.

One good way to find WiFi hotspots

by Dan j Short

If you are part of the growing numbers of people who do a lot of traveling for business, or for personal endeavors, then there is a fairly high probability that you also take along your notebook computer when you are out and about. And, if your laptop is fairly new, then it no doubt is equipped with a wireless mobile capability. If that is the case, then as long as you can locate wireless network hotspots, you will always be able to stay connected to the net.

The more you travel, the more you need to stay connected with your work or with your family while you are away. The internet and portable devices, such as WiFi laptops and personal digital assistants (PDAs), have made it much easier to stay in touch with the people who are most important to you. With the increasing number of WiFi hotspots that are cropping up all over the place, it helps even more. But sometimes it can be somewhat tricky to locate wireless access points that are convenient to where you happen to be.

Not so long ago, travelers who wanted to connect to the internet would be excited if they discovered that the pay phones at the airport had a special phone jack available so they could hook up their modem. But, these days few people still use, or even have modems in their laptops, nor do they have the patience to use a dial-up connection. They simply want to locate wireless hotspots for fast and convenient web access.

One good way to find WiFi hotspots is to use one of the many online resources that are available, which have listings of the various wireless mobile access points in different areas. Many of these online WiFi finder websites will show a listing that indicates the average signal strength, the number of users the network node can handle, and if there is free WiFi available or if the hotspot is part of a networking system that belongs to a paid service. Some of these services allow you to pay as you go, while others offer various subscription plans for their WiFi access.

In many cases, the WiFi internet services that provide subscription plans allow you to subscribe for a limited period of time in case you don’t need such a service on an ongoing basis. The limited subscriptions vary from service to service, but most will provide subscription options for one week or one month at a time. In most cases, these short-term WiFi access subscriptions will be cheaper than the pay-as-you-go option, if you will need the access for more than just a day or two.

The main reason why people choose these WiFi connection subscriptions is because they cannot locate wireless hotspots that are convenient to the places they are going to be, and the small cost of the service is minimal compared to the inconvenience of going out of their way to access a free hotspot.

Regardless of whether you are determined to find a free WiFi access point, or are willing to pay for the access, you will need to locate wireless hotspot locations before you leave on your trip if you are going to depend on the online sites that provide the hotspot listings. There are so many WiFi hotspots available these days that it should not take much preparation to easily find out where you need to go for your wireless mobile internet connection.

How Do Flow Meters Work - Flowmeter Types And Principles

by Adrian Fletcher

Flow meters are devices that are used to measure the flow rate of a certain liquid or gas. They can measure these substances in terms of the volumetric flow rate or the mass flow rate. The volumetric flow rate is generally given in m3/second. The mass flow rate is given in kg/second.

Flow meters have many applications. For individuals, a peak flow meter can measure the lung capacity. This is also used by people with asthma and can be used to determine if an asthma attack is imminent.

However they are most commonly used in industry, notably in machines or processes that require precise amounts of a certain gas or liquid to be applied or added during the manufacturing of an item. This article will cover how some flow meters work.

There are a wide variety of types of flow meters. They are generally classified by what they do or how they operate. For instance, a mass flow meter is a general classification of flow meter that determines the flow rate of a medium in terms of mass even though the operating principles for each meter may be different.

The Coriolis flow meter is a point in case of a principle giving it’s name to the type of flow meter. The Coriolis effect is the force exerted on a liquid moving in a circular motion. In the flow meter this is done by vibrating the pipes that the liquid passes through. The vibrations (or waves) that are created in the pipes are changed when the liquid passes through them. By knowing the changes in the wave vibrations you can work out the flow rate of the liquid.

The ultrasonic flow meter and Doppler shift flow meter also use wave mechanics to determine the flow rate of the medium passing through a pipe or tube.

In the case of the ultrasonic flow meter, two transmitters of ultrasonic sound waves are placed at the ends of a pipe where the measure is to take place. Each transmitter sends a pulse of sound.

The ultrasonic waves are recorded by receivers at opposite ends of the pipe. One wave is sent in the direction of the flow of the liquid to be measured. The other wave is sent in the opposite direction to the flow.

If various constants are known about the metal of the pipe and the liquid or gas passing through the pipe, a rate of flow can be derived from the time it takes each sound wave to reach the receiver.

Doppler shift flow meters also use waves to determine the flow rate. They work on the principle that a sound wave that bounces off a moving particle in the medium has it’s frequency and amplitude changed. By determining the change in these dimensions, the flow rate of the medium can be determined.

A more traditional type of flow meter is the variable area flow meter that uses a float in a calibrated tube. When a substance passes through the tube, the float is displaced by the flow.

The float indicates a measurement on the calibrated tube. This is a correlation of the flow rate of the substance that has just passed through the tube. An example of such a device is the peak flow meter that is used to measure lung capacity. Peak flow meters help people with asthma determine if they are likely to have an asthma attack.

Creating a Reliable Data Centre Checklist

by Amy Nutt

Planning, creating, and building a data centre can be one of the most expensive tasks an IT director can face. In order to maximize cost effectiveness and achieve optimum performance, reliability is key.

Data centre size can range from one room in an office to an entire building, but there are some basic requirements which must be implemented to ensure system reliability. When designing a data centre, efficient planning is very important. A number of areas must be addressed to ensure a dependable and efficient system which is capable of continued operation.

Understand the potential causes of failure

There are a number of areas cited as the most common causes of data centre failure:

Environmental problems Software failure - for example, memory leaks Hardware failure - such as storage or processing problems Operator or procedural error Poor network reliability Security breaches - for example hacker attack

Environmental considerations

When planning a data centre, there are a number of physical and architectural design features which must be implemented to ensure reliability:

- Adequate Air Supply: temperature must be maintained between 20 and 25 degree C and humidity between 40 and 60 %. Too much humidity can cause water to condense on internal components. However if the air is too dry, this can cause static electricity to discharge. Malfunction is likely if the above ranges are not maintained. This is one of the prime causes of data centre malfunction. Implementation of adequate air conditioning and correct architectural design to allow for air circulation between units is vital. Particular care needs to be taken to prevent “hotspots” from occurring.

- Safeguard against power loss: external environmental factors such as hurricane or snowstorm can cause power black outs. It is vital to have a generator to ensure continued function, as well as an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for emergency power. These should be of sufficient size to power cooling systems.

- Fire protection systems: the simplest forms of fire protection are smoke detectors, for early detection of a fire. It is also vital to ensure fire containment to prevent the spread of a fire to the entire data centre. For example: Contained sprinkler systems or gaseous fire suppression

Software, hardware or network failure

Tested and quality assured hardware and software from reputable brands can help increase reliability. Common malfunction in one component, such as an internal fan or storage disc, can quickly lead to failure in another. Ensuring network performance and reliability can also have a huge impact on the performance of the data system.

Operational procedures

It is impossible to completely rule out human error and operational issues. However, devising an operations procedure to not only maximize performance but also track reliability and malfunction is key. Conduct regular back-ups on each production server to ensure quick file repair in the event of damage. Provide adequate operator training to implement protocol and avoid the most basic of errors such as leaving discs in drives, which would prevent an auto-reboot in the event of system failure.

Data security

Particularly important in large data centres with sensitive information, is to ensure adequate physical security. Corporations may consider outsourcing their data centre to an off-site location with 24 hour security guards and video surveillance. System security also requires keeping up-to-date with the latest security and anti-virus software.

Avoid single point of failure

One final key consideration is to avoid having a single point of failure. Test the system before it goes operational and ensure that if one component fails there is sufficient backup to ensure the data centre can still function. Back-up will make sure that your important data is never lost.

Filtering Good CAD Services from the Mass

by Lucky Balaraman

If you’re an architect or engineer thinking of outsourcing your CAD drawings, you would no doubt have been confronted with a question at some point in time. And that question is: How do I find a good provider of CAD services?

And probably, MOST PROBABLY, what would have come to mind is, “Go to the search engines and type in ‘CAD Services’”.

Yes, going to the search engines when you’re looking for something is a smart idea, but you’d be surprised to know that nowadays it isn’t the strategy of choice. It has a shortcoming, and that is

** Search engines rank a site based on how good the website is, not on how good the website’s company is. **

After all, for the most part, websites are like ads. Now you tell me: if an ad looks good, does it mean the company being advertised is good? Of course not.

What you need are the opinions of others. Others who have actually used CAD services. That way you’ll see the good, the bad and the ugly.

Say about 10 years ago, being able to find the opinions of others would be a pipe-dream. But today it’s a reality. You CAN do it, and you can do it easily.

How? By going to user forums. If you’re into engineering, go to engineering forums. If you’re into architecture, go to architectural forums. Ask about CAD services and get the naked truth.

To see the URLs of some good engineering forums and architectural forums, just follow the link given at the end of this article.

Once you get to a forum, what you have to do is register (that only takes 2 minutes and zero expense), then ask the question: “Can anyone recommend a good CAD service, based on first-hand experience?” You might also want to ask for a service dealing with your particular platform (AutoCAD, MicroStation, SolidWorks, whatever).

Gather about 10 CAD service provider names using this method. Then carefully evaluate these 10 companies, by messaging them and evaluating the responses you get. Rank the providers and keep only the top three.(We’ll explain more on how to evaluate them in a subsequent installment of this training).

Divvy up your CAD drafting work amongst these three CAD service providers. Of course if you don’t have volume drafting requirements, maybe you could use them in rotation. But ALWAYS have more than one provider on hand.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of this training, which will start to explain how to evaluate the names you got from the forums.

3G Apple iPhone Coming This June or Not.

by wendy Matters

This is probably the most widely leaked secret in the IT community - there will be an Apple iPhone 3G released this June. We’ve had confirmations from the hardware specifications released by VodaPhone for Italy.

What is 3g and why wasn’t the Apple iPhone a 3G in the initial stage?

3rd Generation is the term represented by 3G it can use one of two competing cellular phone data protocols. This allows for unbelievable download speeds that are about half what a DSL line gives for downloads, and very nearly equal for uploads. Only sheer speculation have covered whether or not Apple iPhone 3G will pick up HADPA, 3.5 generation protocol.

So where does all this speculation come from. Well, it is based on a lot of European information, HSDPA is the dominant standard there. VodaPhone and StarOn use HSDPA networks. Since April however, press releases announced a 3G Apple iPhone on the Internet. Walter Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal stated, “A 3G Apple iPhone is guaranteed to happen in the next three months” in a round robin press conference that occured back in April.

What one should be concerned about is this: The industrial design secrets are kept close to Apple; however we do know that this design will be slimmer, and of course, the Apple iPhone 3G will make data access much quicker.

So where’s Apple’s over-hyped secrecy? There was a signing of non-disclosure agreements during the launching of the iPhone last year, before journalist could see the hardware. So one can only imagine if Mossberg spoke of its 3G connectivity, what other cool features does Apple have in store that he is unable to speak off?

There is a range of speculation from the 3G Apple iPhone having built in GPS capabilities, to new software, this software stemming from the Software Development Kit, this being released last February. Also there are some speculations about graphic acceleration. (Apple on the other hand has publicly released announcements about integrating with Microsoft Exchange-driven “push” email, the major competitive advantage that Research In Motion’s Blackberry has.)

This summer is the marked time span for the release of an 8MB and 16MB iPhone well so it have been announced - some hardware experts, mention of the success of the MacBook Air will be made, that this may be a red herring, and the 3G Apple iPhone may have a higher amount of Flash RAM.

One thing that likely isn’t going to change, given the thinner form factor, is battery life. That’s something of a let down for the Apple iPhone devotees; the 3G Apple iPhone is thinner and has a more powerful radio, which will prevent an expansion of the battery capacity in the first case, and consume more juice in the second.
