Hemorrhoids: What Are They, Why Do They Happen And How Do I Get Rid Of Them?

No one likes to talk about hemorrhoids and I suppose I don’t blame them. They aren’t pleasant to look at and they’re a pain to deal with. I’ve always had an interest in chronic or recurring medical issues and I’ve spent several years compiling detailed information about this particularly aggravating condition. While many people are embarrassed to admit that they suffer from hemorrhoids, they should take some comfort in the fact that they aren’t alone. Humans have suffered from the irritation of “piles” as far back as recorded history and a majority of people will have to endure a bout at some time in their lives, especially once they are past fifty. There is also some comfort to be taken in knowing that, for the most part, they are simply a nuisance and not particularly dangerous; bleeding hemorrhoids should be examined by a doctor immediately, but for the most part, itching and discomfort are the worst one can expect.

What exactly is a hemorrhoid? Given how common the condition is, does this reflect some inherent design flaw in the human body?

In my opinion, the body is pretty well designed. If there’s a flaw anywhere, it’s in our diet and our habits; we sometimes eat food that causes strain when trying to pass a stool and we spend a lot of time sitting in ways that put pressure on the area. Hemorrhoids are caused when blood vessels are strained in the pelvic area, resulting in swollen vessels in the area of the anus. When they protrude and are visible, they are particularly prone to being itchy and causing the person suffering from them a great deal of discomfort. Internally, within the rectum, they are less noticeable, but bleeding hemorrhoids may give their presence away through evidence of blood in the stool. Anyone who notices blood in this area should see their doctor to have it checked out instead of starting self-prescribed hemorrhoid treatment since there’s a chance that the blood may be a symptom of something more serious.

There are dozens, if not hundreds of creams, ointments, suppositories, compresses and pills out there and trying to find one that works can be a challenge. While national brands like Preparation H have been sold for years, I frequently hear that ClearMed is the preferred hemorrhoid treatment choice of medical professionals.

While hemorrhoid treatment is probably the last thing that most people would choose to study, Lawrence Kreger has established a reputation as a thorough researcher who has spent years documenting everything there is to know about this aggravating condition. His collection of remedies dating back to medieval times has been featured in medical exhibits and Lawrence has contributed numerous articles on the effectiveness of cures. While bleeding hemorrhoids are cause for concern, Lawrence has found that most variations respond well to treatment if the correct medication is used.
